Making your Ceremony Truly Yours

One of my favourite things about being a celebrant is helping couples create a ceremony that actually feels like them.

There’s no “right” way to do a wedding ceremony anymore — and honestly, that’s the magic of it. Your ceremony can be romantic, funny, emotional, relaxed, quirky, meaningful… or a lovely mix of all of those things.

Alongside your vows and ring exchange, many couples choose to include a symbolic ritual or personal touch that reflects their relationship, family or personalities.

You might choose a handfasting ceremony (yes, this is where the phrase “tying the knot” comes from), with ribbons or cords wrapped around your hands as a symbol of your lives being joined together. Some couples make this even more personal by having their ribbons specially made from meaningful fabrics — perhaps a favourite tie, a piece of a wedding dress, or clothing belonging to a loved one who can’t be there in person but is still very much part of the day.

A quaich ceremony is another beautiful option — sharing a drink from a traditional cup to represent love, trust and the life you’re about to share. Champagne works beautifully… but so does Guinness, whiskey, coffee or even tequila if that’s more your style!

Some couples love involving their guests too. A ring warming ceremony allows your wedding rings to be passed around your closest family and friends before the exchange, with each person holding them for a moment and sending good wishes your way. I’ve also seen beautiful handmade ring warming cushions created from a loved one’s clothing, which adds another lovely layer of connection — guests often smile as memories come flooding back, and sometimes even give it a little hug as it passes by.

Others choose a wine box or anniversary letter ceremony, where guests write notes for the couple to place inside a personalised box or bottle to open on their first anniversary — usually alongside a favourite bottle of wine and a reminder of how loved they are.

Sand blending ceremonies can be lovely for couples bringing families together, and many of these rituals also work beautifully for vow renewals or naming ceremonies too.

The lovely thing is that these moments don’t have to be overly formal or serious. They simply add another layer of meaning, connection and personality to your ceremony.

And if none of the traditional rituals feel right? We can create something completely unique together instead.

That’s the joy of a celebrant-led ceremony — it should feel like your story, told your way.
