You’ve just got engaged, massive congratulations! Whether it was a big romantic proposal or a quiet moment between the two of you, this is such a special time in your lives and you deserve to soak it all in. You’ve made your announcement, posted the ring selfies, and your phone hasn’t stopped buzzing with messages from friends and family. But now that the excitement is settling, you might be wondering… where do we even start with wedding planning?

Don’t worry, I’ve got you. I’m Melissa, a relaxed and authentic wedding photographer based in Northern Ireland, and I’ve helped hundreds of couples just like you capture their big day and enjoy the planning process too. So here’s a simple guide on what to do after you get engaged, packed with helpful tips to keep the planning exciting, not overwhelming.

1. Take a Moment to Soak It All In

Before you jump into Pinterest boards and spreadsheets, take a breather. Go on a wee date night, pop a bottle of bubbly, and just enjoy this new chapter together. There’s no rush to have all the answers right away, wedding planning is a journey, not a race.

2. Chat About What Matters Most

Before you dive into booking anything, sit down together and talk about what’s most important to you both. Is it the party? The ceremony? A specific venue or that one photographer you’ve followed for years? This helps shape your priorities, your budget, and your overall vibe for the day.

3. Choose a Rough Date or Season

You don’t need to lock in an exact wedding date just yet, but having an idea of the season or year will help when you start contacting venues and suppliers. If you’re dreaming of a summer wedding in Northern Ireland or a cosy winter celebration, it’s helpful to know that early on.

4. Book Your Key Wedding Suppliers Early

If there’s one piece of advice I could give every newly engaged couple, it’s this: book the suppliers you love as soon as possible. Wedding venues, photographers, videographers and hair & makeup artists often get booked up 12 to 24 months in advance especially for popular summer weekends.

If you’ve had your heart set on someone (maybe that’s me – hi!), reach out early to avoid disappointment.

Here’s a list of suppliers you may want to secure sooner rather than later:

Wedding Venue (many couples choose this first and then confirm the date based on availability)
Wedding Photographer (hello, I’m Melissa – I cover weddings across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland)
Videographer
Celebrant or Registrar
Makeup Artist & Hair Stylist
Wedding Band &/or DJ
Florist
Dress Boutique
Dress Alterations (don’t leave this to the last minute!)
Wedding Planner or Stylist (if using one)
Caterer (if not included in your venue package)

Top tip: Make a checklist of your top three must-haves and prioritise those. It’s easy to get caught up in the extras, but if you lock in the big ones early, the rest will fall into place.

5. Start a Pinterest Board – Just for Fun

This is where the creativity starts to flow! Begin gathering ideas, everything from flowers and dresses to colour schemes and décor. Create a shared board with your partner or keep your own for inspiration.

But a gentle word of advice some wedding images floating around online are now made using AI. They might look amazing, but they’re not always real or achievable. Use Pinterest as a fun tool for inspiration, not a strict blueprint for your day. This should be a playful part of planning, not something that adds pressure.

6. Chat to Recently Married Friends

Friends who’ve been through the wedding planning process recently can be a goldmine of useful tips  from favourite suppliers to things they wish they’d done differently. Don’t be afraid to ask!

7. Enjoy the Journey

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the to-do lists, but don’t forget to enjoy this season of your life. The planning should feel like a celebration, not a chore. Say no to pressure, comparison, and unrealistic expectations. This is your day and it’s all about the two of you.
