Including Our Boys in Our Wedding Day

As a recent bride and a mum of two young boys, it was very important to my husband and me that our boys played a big part in our special day. It was about giving our children a special role, not a performance.

Otis and Hudson were 3 and 1 years old at the time and have always thrived on routine.

A long day for children is so much more than just a celebration, it’s loud music, unfamiliar faces, long timelines and changes to routine. All of which can become quite overwhelming for little ones.

I always envisioned both boys walking down the aisle and that was the plan until the big day was fast approaching. I knew it was best for them to already be standing with their daddy at the front before guests started to arrive (as we all know what is best for our own children).

I wanted to keep them comfortable and as calm as possible.

During our ceremony, led by humanist Claire Shearer (who was honestly just so wonderful), our boys were completely comfortable and able to come and go as they pleased.

Then we moved on to photos this was a big one! The weather was scorching hot, they had already been sitting for a while and with no naps thrown into the mix, I knew they needed a burnout.

This was the perfect moment for a wedding nanny to step in 😅. We quickly got a few photos with the boys, then I wanted to send them off for some ice cream and a little run around.

When it was time for dinner and speeches, I wanted both boys to feel completely relaxed, so we set up a kids’ area where they had a calm space and somewhere to reset if they needed it.

During our wedding planning, we visited our venue quite a lot and brought the boys with us. This really helped, as we were able to talk about the wedding often and explain to them (mainly to Otis, our eldest) that we were going to have a big party. Some children will want to dance the night away, and some children won’t and both are absolutely fine 🫶🏻.

Involving children in a wedding is about valuing their presence while also respecting their limits.

Both of my boys crashed around 8–9pm and were ready for bed. It was important to us as parents that we got them to their room and made sure they were comfortable before we could enjoy the rest of our night.

No matter what, our little children will always come first but wouldn’t it take a little pressure off if someone was there to help? ✨ 💖
