Getting engaged is such an exciting moment. One minute you’re showing everyone the ring and soaking up all the congratulations and the next your head is spinning with questions about planning and costs. If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed already, I promise you that’s completely normal. I’m Melissa, I’ve been a wedding photographer for over 13 years now and I’m here to help. Most couples I work with have never planned a wedding before and suddenly they’re expected to know how it all works.
Wedding venue
Your venue is usually one of the biggest wedding expenses and also one of the first things couples book. Costs can vary massively depending on location, whether it’s a hotel or an exclusive use venue, the size of your day and what’s included. Some venues include a lot in their packages while others offer a blank canvas. Neither is right or wrong, it really comes down to the kind of day you’re dreaming of.
Catering
Many hotel based venues will give you a cost per head which often includes your meal and sometimes the room hire too. On average, catering in Northern Ireland can range from around £40 to £160 per guest depending on the menu and style of dining you choose. If you’re opting for an exclusive or non hotel venue, there’s usually a venue hire fee as well as catering on top. Venue hire alone can be anywhere from £3,000 to £8,000, with catering then provided by an outside supplier.
One thing I always remind couples is that guest numbers have a huge impact on overall cost, so even small changes here can make a big difference.
Flowers and room dressing
Flowers and styling can completely transform your space and the cost will depend on the types of flowers you choose, how much coverage you want and the size of your venue.
On average, couples spend between £500 and £1,500 on flowers and room dressing. Simpler setups can be closer to £300, while more elaborate designs with premium flowers and statement installations can go over £3,000.
The good news is this is one area that’s very flexible and can be scaled up or down to suit your budget.
Wedding attire
Wedding outfits are another important part of the budget. On average, a wedding dress in Northern Ireland tends to cost between £1,000 and £2,500, while a groom’s suit can range from £500 to £1,500 depending on whether it’s bought or hired.
You’ll also want to factor in bridesmaids, groomsmen and accessories like shoes and alterations, which are often forgotten about early on.
Hair and makeup
Hair and makeup prices vary depending on experience, location and the services you choose. On average, you can expect to pay around £150 to £300 for hair and £150 to £250 for makeup. It’s worth remembering that trials are usually an additional cost, but they’re such a great investment for peace of mind on the morning of your wedding.
Photography and videography
Capturing your wedding day properly is so important. Long after the day itself, your photos and film are what you’ll come back to again and again.
In Northern Ireland, photography and videography packages combined can range from around £1,200 to £5,000 depending on experience, coverage and what’s included. While it’s a significant part of the budget, these are the memories that will last a lifetime and tell the story of your day exactly as it felt.
Wedding planner
If you’re short on time or want extra support, a wedding planner can be a brilliant investment. Full planning services typically range from £1,000 to £5,000, but many planners now offer partial planning or on the day coordination which can be a more budget friendly option.
Having someone there to guide you and manage logistics can take a huge amount of pressure off.
Marriage notice and legal fees
To legally get married in Northern Ireland, you’ll need to give notice at the council covering the area where your ceremony will take place. There is a fee to do this and notices need to be submitted well in advance, especially if either of you have been married before.
It’s always best to check the most up to date information with your local council so there are no surprises.
Celebrant
If you’re choosing a celebrant led ceremony, costs usually range from £400 to £1000 depending on the type and length of ceremony and the experience of your celebrant.
Celebrant ceremonies are a popular choice for couples who want something really personal and relaxed, and they can take place in a wider range of locations.
Transport
Wedding transport costs vary depending on the type of vehicle and how long you need it for. On average, couples spend between £250 and £500 on wedding cars, although luxury or vintage options can cost more.
Entertainment
For evening entertainment, wedding bands in Northern Ireland typically range from £800 to £1,500. Smaller or newer bands can be closer to £500, while larger and more established bands may be over £3,000.
Some couples opt for a DJ instead or combine both, so it’s worth thinking about the atmosphere you want for your evening celebrations.
The cost of getting married in Northern Ireland can vary hugely depending on your vision, priorities and budget. Whether you’re planning an intimate celebration or a big party with all your favourite people, the most important thing is that your day feels right for you.
