Behind the Mic: A Wedding Ceremony and Drinks Reception in Northern Ireland

Weddings in Ireland have a magic all their own — historic venues, stunning hotels and churches so beautiful they make every moment feel cinematic. Being a wedding singer means I get to step right into that magic, shaping the soundtrack of someone’s most important day.

I always arrive early, meet the coordinator, and learn how the room sounds before a single guest takes a seat. My goal is always the same: make the music feel personal to the couple, not like a playlist with a microphone.

Checking over the couple’s song requests, setting up my equipment, checking the acoustics, adjusting the speaker placement, and running through a few lines of each song might seem small, but it ensures that when the guests arrive, the music flows effortlessly.

Pre-ceremony songs as the guests begin to arrive is part of the package – sets the tone and allows both me and the space to warm up!

As the ceremony begins, the room shifts. Nervous hands are held a little tighter, smiles exchanged, and every note sang feels like it carries the couple’s story. Watching them exchange vows, seeing the subtle reactions of friends and family, I feel privileged to translate those emotions into live music. It’s a rare and humbling experience to witness that much love while knowing your voice helps frame it.

After the ceremony, the drinks reception is a chance to change the tone. Softer melodies for the times while guests mingle, clink glasses and share laughter. I adjust the setlist to match the energy—background music that was engaging without overwhelming conversations, upping the tempo with singalong belters as the convos and laughter gets louder.
Watching the couple relax and enjoy their first moments as newlyweds while music wrapped around the room is one of the highlights of my job.

Being a wedding singer isn’t just about performing—it’s about reading the room, anticipating moments, and enhancing experiences without ever overshadowing them. Irish weddings offer incredible backdrops, but it’s the people, the emotions, and the connections that truly make each day unforgettable.
