Should Wedding DJs Take Requests? What Brides & Grooms Should Know

Some advice for couples who are wondering about requests and how best to handle this on their wedding night.

One of the most common questions couples ask when booking a wedding DJ is: “Do you take requests?”

The short answer is yes, most wedding DJs are more than happy to take requests. However, there is a big difference between taking requests and being dictated to all night, and understanding that difference can have a huge impact on the atmosphere of your wedding.

Why DJs Usually Welcome Requests

Requests can be a really positive thing at a wedding. Guests often ask for songs that mean something to them personally, maybe it was played on the stag or hen party, reminds them of a shared memory, or simply brings a group together.

In many cases, a DJ might not personally rate a song as a “dancefloor filler”, but because it has meaning to the crowd, it works brilliantly. These moments can create big reactions, laughter, sing-alongs, and unforgettable memories, which is exactly what a wedding night should be about.

When Requests Can Go Wrong

That said, not all requests are good requests, and timing is everything.

A song that might be fine earlier in the night can completely empty a dancefloor if it’s played at the wrong moment. Wedding DJs are constantly reading the room, watching energy levels, age mix, alcohol flow, and momentum. Dropping the wrong song at the wrong time can break that flow instantly.

This is why experienced DJs should be trusted to use their judgment. They’re not ignoring requests, they’re deciding when (or if) a song will actually work.

The Problem With Rigid Playlists

One thing we generally advise against is sticking rigidly to a playlist for the entire night unless there’s a very good reason for it.

In our experience, a fixed playlist might keep a small group happy, but at a typical wedding of 80–120 guests, it often comes at the expense of the wider room. A wedding is about shared atmosphere, not catering to just a handful of people.

A DJ who can adapt in real time will almost always deliver a better night than one who is locked into a pre-set list.

Why Some DJs Limit Requests

Another reason some DJs are cautious with requests is unfortunately down to behaviour.

Occasionally, guests can become demanding or even abusive, insisting their song be played next, claiming the bride or groom requested it (when they didn’t), or threatening to leave the dancefloor if it’s not played immediately.

The reality is: no song is that urgent. A professional DJ’s role is to manage the night for everyone, not respond to pressure from one individual.

Songs to Be Careful With

In Northern Ireland especially, some songs can be politically or culturally contentious. While they may mean something to a small group, they can easily offend other guests, venue staff, or create unnecessary tension.

Your wedding night should be about celebration, not division — and a good DJ will help steer the night away from anything that could cause discomfort.

The Best Approach for Couples

The best balance is simple:

  • Let your DJ know must-play songs and do-not-play songs in advance
  • Allow requests, but trust your DJ’s experience
  • Avoid micromanaging the night
  • Focus on atmosphere, not individual demands

A great wedding DJ doesn’t just play music, they manage energy, emotion, and flow. When couples trust that process, the result is almost always a packed dancefloor and a better night for everyone.
