15 Essential Questions to Ask When Choosing Your Wedding Venue

This is such an exciting time for couples, with lots of engagements and wedding planning in full swing. Choosing your wedding venue is one of the first steps in planning your big day, but it can feel overwhelming if you’re not sure what to ask.

1. Can we hold the date provisionally?

Many venues allow you to temporarily reserve a date while you decide. Some do this free of charge, while others may require a deposit.

2. Is our preferred date available and can you accommodate our guests?

Checking availability and capacity upfront can save time and disappointment. Always make this one of your first questions.

3. Are you licensed for civil ceremonies?

Many venues now offer both ceremony and reception spaces. Having everything in one venue makes your day feel more relaxed and seamless.

4. Will other weddings take place on the same day?

Even if it’s usually not an issue, knowing about other weddings helps plan photography locations and guest flow.

5. Are there restrictions on venue use?

If you’re dreaming of an outdoor ceremony or specific photo locations, check what areas you can use and what the backup plan is for bad weather.

6. Can we use our preferred suppliers?

Venues may have recommended suppliers, but you’re not limited to them. Your photographer should be a great fit for you, not just on the list. I love exploring new venues to find fresh and unique spots for photos that truly capture your day.

7. Can we get ready at the venue?

Having hair, makeup, and photography onsite makes the morning less stressful. Staying overnight, as I did at Galgorm Resort & Spa, adds a touch of calm and luxury to the day.

8. Are there restrictions on decorations?

Check rules around candles, confetti, or other decorative items. If you’ve dreamt of a particular look or photo, make sure it’s allowed.

9. How flexible is the wedding timeline?

Venues may suggest timelines that work best for them, but your day should work for you. I always work quickly to make sure couples enjoy their day and guests aren’t kept waiting.

10. What about the wedding meal?

Ask to see menu options, including vegetarian or children’s meals. Food is a key part of the day, so making sure everyone is catered for matters.

11. Can you accommodate your entertainment?

Whether you plan to have a band or DJ, ask about setup times, sound restrictions, and space. Early planning ensures a smooth evening.

12. Is a dedicated wedding coordinator included?

Most venues provide a point of contact to guide you. Having someone experienced to answer questions can save you a lot of stress.

13. What guest accommodation is available?

Ask about rooms on-site, discounted rates, or nearby options. This is especially important for family or guests travelling from afar.

14. Are there hidden costs?

Ask about corkage, extra room charges, or indoor ceremony fees. Knowing all costs upfront avoids surprises later.

15. What is the cancellation policy?

Every venue has different deposit requirements, payment timelines, and cancellation rules. Understanding these gives you peace of mind.
